How Does Learning Happen? (HDLH): A Pedagogical Approach for the Early Years

How Does Learning Happen? (HDLH) is Ontario’s framework for early childhood education, built on four foundational pillars: Belonging, Well-Being, Engagement, and Expression. These principles guide Early Childhood Educators in nurturing the emotional, social, cognitive and language development of children through meaningful learning experiences.

How ARTpath Aligns with HDLH

BELONGING

My aim is to create environments where children feel supported and connected to their peers and the learning process. Through collaborative artistic expression, we build a sense of belonging and inclusion, ensuring every child feels valued and embraced.

WELL-BEING

I create programs to nurture emotional well-being by encouraging children to express their emotions through art. This process helps them build self-regulation skills and resilience.

ENGAGEMENT

Programs are actively engaging children in the learning process creatively. By exploring new ideas and taking creative risks, children remain immersed in activities that challenge and inspire them.

EXPRESSION

Opportunities for self-expression and communication are encouraged. This helps children develop emotional literacy, confidence, and the ability to articulate their thoughts and feelings.

After completing an ARTpath workshop, younger students will have developed:

  • A stronger sense of belonging with their peers and the learning process!

  • Improved emotional well-being, finding healthy ways to express emotions through art.

  • Active engagement getting hands-on and creative with activities that make learning feel more like fun.

  • Confident Self-Expression of thoughts and feelings through art and discovering their unique voice.
